The Serving Trap – Mark 10:28 and Matthew 20:1-16

In last week’s message, we heard Peter ask Jesus, “We have left everything to follow you”, and Jesus responded by, essentially, saying that if you’ve given up or lost relationships or resources for me and the Gospel, you will be receive 100x better in this life and in eternity. Interestingly, that’s not all Peter asked, and it’s not all Jesus had to say. That’s where this exact moment in the Gospel of Matthew is worth taking a good look at because there we find out that the complete question Peter asked had an edge to it that Jesus felt was worthy of a parable – called the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard. It’s through this incredible story that we are able to diagnose some symptoms of heart issues we all struggle with as we serve the Lord. Jesus wants to speak into that.
