Jesus Sounds the Alarm – Mark 9:42-50

In one of his most severe and graphic conversations with the disciples, Jesus directly speaks to a couple of issues about which we all tend to get uncomfortable – namely, the seriousness of sin and the reality of Hell. Jesus, who could never be branded as soft-pedalling a topic, tells us what’s at stake and provides warnings about causing others to sin, causing ourselves to sin, and calls us to embrace a sacrificial life of trust and obedience in him. If, in fact, what Jesus has to say is true, despite the unpopular topic, this is one of the most loving things about which Jesus could ever be upfront with us. This passage is a reminder to us that, while we need the encouragement in passages of scripture (like we heard in our Thanksgiving Day message), we desperately need the warning passages of scripture if we are intent on being one of his disciples.
